PRESS RELEASE
NYE NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION TO HOST EMERGENCY
PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION NIGHT

Thursday March 7 at 5:30 PM the Nye Neighborhood Association (NNA) is sponsoring an information night with Newport Fire Chief Rob Murphy and Newport Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Del Lockwood. The event is free and open to the public. It will take place at the Newport Performing Arts Center Lobby. Refreshments and informal social time will begin at 5:00 PM and will continue after the program to allow neighbors to meet each other and mingle. The two Newport officials were at the center of the city’s response to the recent ice storm and will be able to speak about that event and provide information on being prepared for future emergencies such as wildfires, tsunamis, earthquakes, floods or extreme weather. • Save the Date – Preparing for the next emergency/disaster- March 7 5:30 at the PAC– NNA will host a presentation and discussion on steps to take individually and as a neighborhood for situations like the recent ice storm, wildfires, dam failure, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc.  Newport Fire Chief Rob Murphy and Emergency Planner Del Lockwood will be present.  Additional experts will be announced.  Watch for future announcements.  This event will be open to the entire Newport community.
  • Pirate Slide – A quick word about the Pirate Slide at the Coast Park playground next to the PAC. There is a part of the slide that needs to be fabricated and some overall design changes need to be made. Parks & Recreation anticipates completing installation in Spring/Summer this year.
  • Sam Moore Parkway Playground – Another playground in need of TLC is the one at Sam Moore Parkway (skateboard park) on NW High between 6th and 8th St. The Newport Parks and Rec Department is soliciting public input for playground improvements with a formal meeting Tues. Feb 13 5:30-7:00 pm at the Newport Rec Center. You can also fill out an online survey if you can’t make the meeting through Sam-Moore-Playground-Community-Input.
  • Paint Needed for Banner Project – Preparations for the annual Nye Beach Banner Project have started. Veronica Lundell, NNA Board Member and Jovi owner, paints the banners with a base coat before distribution to the artists to paint their fabulous designs. Veronica could use donations of unwanted extra paint for the base coats on the banner fabric. If you have some leftover paint that is:
  • Acrylic satin, eggshell, or flat finish (not gloss or semi-gloss)
  • Good condition (clean, not dried out, relatively new, has not been frozen)
  • In quart or gallon containers
  • Not white or sage green (she has lots of those colors!)

You can bring it by or drop it off at the front porch of Jovi (232 NW Coast St # B; 541-270-3934) in Nye Beach. If you are interested in the project and want to contribute, including creating a banner, just call the number above for more information.

  • Zoning Change for Custom Creative Work – The Newport City Council will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers to consider amending the Newport Municipal Code (NMC) to establish “Custom Creative Work” as a subgroup of the manufacturing and production industrial use category in the City’s commercial and light-industrial zones, and conditionally in I-2 and I-3 zones. This would allow for small businesses that produce artistic products and studios where the public can create art works in the Nye Beach commercial areas. The Planning Commission has reviewed and is formally recommending approval by the City Council.  NNA submitted a letter of support to the city.  Our thanks to Carol Shenk and the Coastal Arts Guild for proposing and championing this effort Please click on File-2-Z-23-Public-Notice.pdf for more information.
  • Survey for Beautification – The Discover Newport Committee is leading a campaign to gather resident feedback on beautification ideas and goals for the City of Newport.  To access the survey, you will find the link and QR Code in Press-Release-Beautification-Survey.

We look forward to helping to improve our neighborhood in 2024 and hope you will join us in these efforts.
